Why so much? Well a few reasons. First, you don’t have to pay that much for it- the new Mac Pro’s base model starts at a (still pricey) $6,000- but all the bells and whistles can push that price tag into BMW territory very quickly. So what comes with the hefty price tag? Well the $6k base model is pretty powerful in its own right, with 32 GB of memory, an 8-core processor, and a Radeon Pro 580x graphics card that can play the largest of media. Its processor is the Intel Xeon W- the same chip that runs complex 3D CAD software and rendering, and has been used by Intel to develop artificial intelligence programs.

You may be asking ‘How the heck does it get up to $50k then?’

Well that version comes with a 28-core processor- yes you read that right. Along with 4TB of storage, 1.5 TB of memory, and two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPU’s- this makes it one of the most powerful computers ever built. Add in Apple’s Afterburner card (an accelerator card that plays back multiple streams of 8k video simultaneously, and the price tag hits a whopping $52k!

This is the first new Mac Pro since the last launch back in 2013, so industry pundits and techies were anticipating a top-of-the-line model.

Even crazier still is that price tag doesn’t include software or a display- this is strictly for hardware performance.

Apple is currently taking orders for the new Mac Pro for U.S. customers now.
